Tax Planning is About Saving Money

Most small business owners pay more tax than necessary. Is your tax bill too high?

Common Reasons Why Business Owners Overpay Taxes

① Improper Entity Selection or Improper Tax Treatment
② Ineffecient Compensation Structure
③ Ineffective Use of Deductions and Depreciation
④ Poor Record Keeping
⑤ Failure to Use a Tax Professional

If you haven't done any tax planning then you're probably paying too much.

Is Paying Taxes a Patriotic Duty?

Politicians regularly tell us, particularly when they have a pet project at stake, that paying taxes is our "patriotic duty." There is no doubt that we must pay taxes, state and federal law require it. But there is no duty to pay anything more than what the Tax Code absolutely requires.

The courts have made it clear (even if the politicians haven't) that we have no duty to pay any additional tax beyond what the law requires. Some politicians may argue that certain people or businesses do not pay their "fair" share of taxes. They are free to try to convince Congress to change the Tax Code. But until then, we're going to work with our clients to save them as much money as the law allows.

The legal right of a taxpayer to decrease the amount of what otherwise would be his taxes, or altogether avoid them, by means which the law permits, cannot be doubted.
Gregory v. Helvering, 293 U.S. 465 (1935)
There is nothing wrong with a strategy to avoid the payment of taxes. The Internal Revenue Code doesn’t prevent that.
— Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist
